Halloween Tintype Pop-Up!

  • Kith + Kin 3060 West Jefferson Street Philadelphia, PA, 19121 United States (map)

Celebrate this Halloween with a keepsake to last a lifetime! We are excited to host this Tintype Pop-Up with Artist/Mother Maurene Cooper of Vanity Tintypes. Cooper uses 19th century photographic techniques and equipment to produce unique modern photographic heirlooms as unique as your child. Your 20 minute personalized session will include one 4x5 print (you will be able to choose from 2 favorites) featuring your child in their Halloween costume.

What is tintype? Think of tintype as the elegant goth ancestor to the polaroid. Tintype is a 19th-century photographic process invented in 1851. The process remained the predominant image-making technology until the end of the 1880’s. Tintype involves coating a sheet of tin with a sticky substance called collodion, which is then submerged in a bath of silver nitrate. Essentially the artist is creating a film that will be exposed to light, then develop and stop. In the fixing process, the tin plate can be exposed to daylight, and you will see a blue negative turn into a black and white positive. Once washed and dried, the plate is coated with a layer of shellac and is ready to be taken home. The resulting image is a one-of-a-kind modern heirloom.
